For homeowners and contractors alike, Southern Dirt & Land is here to assist you with all your land clearing, construction site preparation, dirt work, and other land service needs. Our company is founded upon transparency and our communication with you begins with ensuring you’re informed about the entire process. We want you to know exactly what to expect when you require the services of an excavation and grading company in DeSoto County, MS. With that goal in mind, we’re here to answer some of the most commonly asked questions about excavation and grading.
What’s the difference between excavation and grading?
Excavating is moving earth and dirt to clear and prepare an area for some kind of construction. This could be putting in a foundation for a home or shed, basement, pool, pond, landscaping, or other building projects. Grading involves leveling and shaping the land, which could be to create slopes or make it perfectly level and ensure that the area will properly drain.
How do I know if I need a permit for my project?
Permitting is required for most projects but largely depends on the scope of your construction project and DeSoto regulations. Southern Dirt & Land is well-versed in the local permitting requirements and process. We will ensure our work for you is properly permitted and adheres to all codes.
How much does excavation and grading cost?
As with any land or building project, the cost varies greatly. For excavation and grading, the factors that affect the cost of work include the type of soil, size and scope of the dirt work, the terrain and contours (steep slopes, etc.), and so on. We offer free estimates on excavation and grading so you can get a clearer idea of the cost associated with your project.
What kind of access will the excavation team need?
Due to the machinery and equipment needed for excavation and grading, we may need to remove obstacles, widen or open gates, and in some cases we may have to ask to gain access from nearby properties. This enables our excavators, dump trucks, and bulldozers to move into the project space.
How long does excavation take?
The length of time it will take us to excavate and grade your land depends on the size of your project. Most smaller jobs will take a few days whereas larger tasks could take weeks.

We had Teyton clear land, install drains and lay sod at our house. We are so happy with the work he did. He was always on time, great communication and did exceptional work. We even added on finishing our driveway because he did such a great job. We would definitely use Southern Dirt again and highly recommend him.

I had Teyton Cloar from southerndirt.net come out and clear brush at the farm today. I couldn't be more happy and satisfied. Will definitely be having him back for more!

Teyton came out to install a French drain at my house recently. He showed up on time and with the proper tools for the job. He completed the job in a timely manner and was fair priced. I was very pleased.

A huge shout out and thank you to Teyton! We had a lot of tree damage in March tornado including one massive 50+ year old tree that fell and ripped up our concrete driveway. The root ball was huge and Teyton and his skid steer successfully got it pulled up and carried off for us. It took a few tries, a chain saw and some chains but he never gave up. He also cleaned up some other fallen trees and logs for us.
He came quickly after I called him and the price was very reasonable. He had previously built us a couple retaining walls. Would definitely recommend him and plan to use him again soon.
